More

I got a call from my sister and the dr. had just left. He doesn't think that Bill has suffered a stroke (THANK YOU LORD!) and all of this is "normal" (my brain just doesn't live in that normal world and for those who know me......no comment is needed, ha!) Bill is apparently having a time coming out of the anesthesia plus the pain meds.

I also got a call from my great niece and she was having to take her 4 month old daughter, Serenity, to the ER with a possible spine problem. She has a bubble on the base of her spine and she screamed when her diaper was being changed. This is something that just cropped up.

Also, my 7 month old great grandson, Brayden, is at the ER with a swollen face and neck. He's been on antibiotics. Not sure what's going on there, either.

My goodness..... I dare not say "what next".

We are still very blessed. Just busy riding the trail of trials. Just wish the "saddle" was a little more comfy for the ride. I understand if you just start deleting my emails, but I need to vent.

Thank you again for listening, the prayers, calls, cards, emails, flowers, plants, food, & donations. It's so nice to have such a circle of precious friends. We love y'all!

Love and Prayers to all!

Antsy

GOOD MORNING World,

I better be really good. I wouldn't do well in prison since just this being cooped up really bites.

We are still waiting on the dr. to change Joel's asthma meds. Good grief.....you think that it would be a little more important than what they are moving at.  I guess they are counting on me to remember "911". Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. He's not having an alarming amount of problems, just frustrating that the change would make it easier for him to get the preventive meds further down into his lungs so there isn't an emergency later. Breathing in hurts pretty bad right now.

I've not gotten a report on my brother. This is the timing that Joel went into A-fib, so I'm a little antsy about Bill. The dr. & nurses say that a large percentage of heart surgeries do go into A-fib about the 3rd day from surgery.

PRAYERS NEEDED!!!!

Well, I just got the dreaded call. Bill is back on oxygen, the drs. are ordering a CT scan thinking that a possible stroke has taken place. He's showing several signs. Carol is with him and she is going to stay.  I wish that I could be there, too, but have my hands full here plus I've started with some virtigo. It's not bad, but who knows.....the rate we are going....

PLEASE PLEASE PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!!!!!!!

Bill Day 3 / Joel Day 9

My brother is in his own room now. He stood up this morning, no walking, yet.  He's on semi-solid food and all vitals are good. My sister is sitting with him during the day. She says that he looks remarkably well. I hope to be able to go see him this evening.

Home healthcare nurse came to visit Joel this morning. His leg is swollen a bit, still a little short-winded when he first moves around. She is calling the Dr. to change an asthma med. (Someone needs to work on getting these asthma meds generic. They are ridiculous in price, but very much needed.)  All other vitals look good. She said the incision looks very good. ( I still haven't seen it.....fainter, here.)  His appetite is still picking up better and better. Guess that will give him needed strength.  Speaking of....guess I better go fix a sandwich for him. (lean / low fat turkey)

Thanks for the replies.

Pennies

I found a penny the morning that Joel went into A-fib. Then while walking my brother's dogs the day he had surgery, I found a penny and a quarter in his yard.  Just saying.......

I love any story like this. I am not superstitious, I just enjoy "hearing" God speak through all kinds of means.

Pennies
You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from
angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the home of her husband's employer...
My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on  the waterway, and cars costing more than her house..

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. Her husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the  finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of  extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant one evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.
He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment..
Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him..... There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.
How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer.. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had  found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out  for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

"Look at it," he said. "Read what it says."

She read the words, " United States of America ."

 "No, not that. Read further."

 "One cent?"

 "No, keep reading."

 "In God we Trust?"

"Yes!"

"And?. ... .."

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin, I see  that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him. Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray. I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a  response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!"

Day 2 Bill / Day 8 Joel

My brother is doing really well. I talked to my sister about 3 this afternoon and they had already weaned him from the respirator, and had gotten the chest tubes out. He was sitting up and was able to "eat" (all liquids) what they brought him at noon.  He's groggy, but responds to anyone talking to him. Seems like they are moving quicker with things than they did with Joel.  I think Joel's asthma problems kept things moving slower.  We are really rejoicing over the recovery. The dr. told my sister that it was a miracle that Bill was still alive. So, we should learn a lesson that his bad back, poor eyesight, and partial amputations on both feet have been a blessing in disguise. All that has kept him moving pretty slow, so he never over stressed his heart. AMAZING!!!!

This morning, Joel rode with me to get his new medications, go to the bank, and run by the store. He even got out and walked in the grocery store. I was a nervous wreck, but he did fine. He's back in the recliner with remote in hand and his huggy pillow next to him. The pillow is a "gift" from the hospital to hold against his chest when he coughs. He sure uses it.

I'm not used to fixing 3 meals a day, especially trying to do the no fat/low fat; low sugar, low salt stuff.  I REALLY need to go back to work. This is way harder than I would have ever thought and I love to cook. I'm more a Paula Dean gal. Guess that's why Joel's veins stopped up. ha!

We really enjoy the cards, calls, & emails. If I don't answer, please leave a message, and I will get back to you asap.

Please keep praying for a speedy recovery.

Love and Prayers to all!

My Brother Bill

Bill is in ICU. The surgeon said that they had to clean some arteries before they could sew them. He did have 5 bypasses. They will start weaning  him off the respirator tomorrow. The next few days will be critical. Due to his diabetis, and being over weight, he is going to have a tougher time than Joel did as far as healing. There are so many "things" that should have been checked out a long time ago. Thank God for his new dr. of less than a month being on top of things and ordering the tests that discovered all of this. Bill is 64 and has been disabled due to blindness and now legally blind (thanks to many surgeries) for over 15 yrs. Please keep him in your prayers. My sister is here helping with him. I asked the surgeon if we could get 2 for 1. Regardless of how much it appears that I am whining, I really do know that we are truly blessed and we are just in the middle of God's perfect plan for our lives. (I'm just nosey and a control freak and want to know now and be in the middle of the planning).

Joel's had a good day.. I came up with a yummy dish with boiled chicken. I had my doubts there for awhile. It was smelling like wet feathers. I did make some homemade salsa which helped.

Looks like we're gonna get some rain. THANK YOU GOD!

Thanks for listening!

We're Home

Sorry about the lack of updates from yesterday. Guess my computer was thawing from the freezing it took while at the hospital. (That place is way too cold!) It took me several tries to get it up and running and did so, for about 3 min. and then couldn't ever get it going again. oh, well.....better a computer problem than another Joel problem. Plus,  I am now the go getter, "nurse", go getter, cook, go getter, maid, go getter, etc.....hmmmm??? Ya think maybe someone might be milking this a bit?? Naaaaaa

He is doing really well. We got home early afternoon, yesterday. Just trying to find stuff for him to eat. His appetite is back up and running to nearly normal.  I managed to get to the store last night after our son got home. I got "new" food. Lots of fresh fruits & veggies, low fat stuff, chicken, etc. It puzzles me that stuff without all the usual ingredients is more costly. Doesn't less mean less????

Home health care was here this morning to access the wound, and his vitals. So far, so good.  Thank goodness for such a program since I am a fainter.

Just got a call from my brother's wife. He is in surgery as I type. He is having a 5 way bypass. Please keep him in prayer. The very same team that did Joel's surgery is doing my brother's. His name is Bill.

Thank you for all the cards, phone calls, food, visits, flowers, plants and prayers. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful circle of friends.

We won't be going anywhere for a while due to exposure to stuff he doesn't need right now. He is already showing a bit of "worry" about not being able to work, and me being stuck here (his term) with him and can't work, and not being able to go anywhere, etc. etc. That's another "normal".

I will keep ya posted.

To Go or Not To Go

THAT IS THE QUESTION.....The surgeon came in & said, "you still here?" and then asked why. He also said that he thought that Joel was ready to go home and he left the room to go review the charts to make sure everything was "normal". We are still waiting to hear. I love their hurry up and wait games.  Oh, well. It's not like we are rushing home to get ready and go somewhere else.  But we are anxious to be with our dog. (we're old, okay....)

It's a go !!!! We're very soon to be out of here. Getting all the last minute do's and don'ts,

Next email should be from home.

Thanks for all the prayers!

Long Day

We are about to be tucked in for the night. Joel already is. His temp. was a little elevated tonight. Hope that's in one of their "normals".  His appetite is picking up, though, but not with the hospital food. Really.......who coats fish with canned onions????

This has been the longest day ever. I hope tomorrow's update will be more positive.  We are blessed, though. He is getting better, and I met a family whose loved one has been here since Sept.6th. WE ARE BLESSED!!!

My pillow is calling.

Blues

Well.....we've got the Sunday morning blues, actually Joel does, I'm still comfortable with him being under watchful eyes since I tend to panic a bit with any little monitor change.

The dr. just left and we aren't going home today. They are still monitoring the med changes and the fact that his asthma is an issue. Plus, he's only eating about 10 to 30% of what is offered. (I never thought that I'd see Joel Watts turn down food.) Looks like I'll be taking home a skinny man.

We both had a good nights rest, though. I have a comfy recliner with lots of pillows and blankets.

This morning, I went to get Joel an egg sandwich from WhatABurger (on wheat......we're eating healthy, here) and he ate the egg off of it. And then he ate about 1/2 of a pancake and a 4 oz. cup of oj. Now he's resting.

Some friends brought me the yummiest meal last night from Macaronni Grill. OH MY GOSH!!!! It was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good and I don't even like asparagus, at least I didn't think I did. I'll be going there to eat, for sure!!!!

I am sort of brain dead, so may be repeating myself over and over. SORRY! Blame boredom.

Oops, PT is here...we're off to walk, I'll wait to update on that....

He didn't walk as far, but did do 10 steps up and down. His oxygen level did drop to 88 a couple of times....drats!!!!!  He's back resting and trying to catch his breath.  They keep saying this is in the NORMAL range. Wonder who's normal???????

Pics from the Picketts

Goodnight

We're all tucked in for the night. Dad is already asleep. He ate 1/2 a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that Robert made and sent via Aunt Carol.  Bob and Cindy came again tonight and brought me a yummy dinner from Macaroni Grill. It was pasta with a marinara type sauce with broccoli florets, asparagus, & mushrooms. It was soooooooooooooo good!
Dad's vitals are good. Talk to y'all tomorrow.

Love and Prayers!

Not Today

We aren't going home today. SAD!  Just a few more hurdles to get past. They are monitoring a change in meds, breathing, etc.  I really don't mind, though!!! I know, mentally, I will be much more comfortable with him here, but physical......not so much.  The dr. said maybe Mon., but then again it could be tomorrow. WE DON'T KNOW....So, here we are.

He did try a chicken pot pie from Kty. Fried Chick. Not a hit. Spices were yukkkk! So another meal is feeding Mother Earth.

He's sound asleep right now (2:10 p.m.) so I will go make my walk around the hospital and warm up & do some people watching.

Love and Prayers to all!

Good Morning!

We had a pretty peaceful night. Joel's heart rate stayed in a normal range. His oxygen level is up, but he is still on oxygen because whenever he gets up, the level drops, so this morning, the nurse bumped the oxygen flow up a little. They say all of this is normal (I guess I haven't been living in the normal world.)

He wants me to go get a breakfast taco later this morning. I can just imagine the look I'm going to get when I order an alfalfa on corn tortilla to go....not really, he still has permission to eat whatever to jumpstart the appetite. Hopefully this will work.

Not sure if he will be going home this evening. I'm very nervous about that part, but the dr. said last night that if he continues to reach set goals and his vitals have stayed stable, we'll be out of here this evening.  Cabin fever here we come!

Y'all have a blessed day! And again, thank you for the prayers!  Please, continue to lift up my brother, Bill.

Love and Prayers to all!

Holding Steady

Joel is still holding his heart rate down. yeaaaaaa!!!! Just trying to find something to stir up the appetite. The heart dr. told me to go get whatever he wanted to eat and drink (no caffeine), and he could start the heart healthy diet once he started wanting to eat. Joel decided a What-a-burger Jr. and a strawberry milkshake would be perfect. I went and got it. He didn't eat it. SAD!!!!  Hopefully, something will kick the ol' taste buds in.  He's tucked in for the night (they say) and the vitals are looking pretty good.

My brother isn't going to be so fortunate. He had the heart cath.today and found that he has all kinds of problems and will be facing a 5 bypass surgery this coming Tues. The very same team of drs. will be working on him. He has three 100% blockages, one 90 % and one 60%. The heart has made lead off veins to try and stay alive. WONDERS!!! They have sent him home tonight and he will come back in Tues. morning.  He has a lot of other health issues that are going to really complicate things. His name is Bill Spence. Please add him to any and all prayer chains.

Thanks for letting me "vent" and whine a bit. Seeing others around us here make us realize that we really are blessed and need not to be so whiney!

Love and Prayers to all!

Better

Well, I guess them bringing in the bright red crash cart had an effect on Joel. His heart has regulated with just the meds and they are not going to have to shock it. It could still change, but so far, he's been in the 75 range for the past 3 hrs. Thank you so much for the prayers.

He's even been up walking a few steps, got a quick shower, and is sitting up in the reclining chair. He's so much more comfortable looking since the heart isn't racing out of his chest. I was even able to run down and check on my brother, Bill and then to the cafeteria to grab a sandwich. (sort of a wasted trip as far as yummy) I miss my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and cereal.

As for my brother. He is waiting on a heart cath (they are running 2 hrs. behind). We aren't sure what he faces but should know this evening. Please add him to your prayer lists, too.

Will keep ya posted.

Continue Prayers for Joel

Please continue your prayers for Joel. He started what they call A-fib at 1:30 this morning and they have not been able to control it. They've gotten it better with meds, but not where it needs to be. He is so miserable between the pain, the yukky feeling the A-fib is causing, some nausea, etc. The surgeon came in and was surprised saying that he didn't think that Dad would have gone into it, but it is a very common thing with 60 -70 % open heart surgery patients.

He is back on an IV drip for the A-fib. They do have it down, but not under control, yet. The dr. says if the meds don't work there is another procedure they would do. It's so hard to stay in control of emotions since I am one that cries through some commercials.

Our daughter flew out this morning at 4:30 and has arrived back in CO. safely. She and I would leave the hospital late at night to get a "good" nights rest at a near by hotel and then come back early the next morning when visiting hours started. I will be staying here at the hospital from now on 24/7 until he is released.

I will keep everyone posted.

Prayers for Husband and Brother

Please put Joel on your prayer chains. He was admitted to the hospital Friday evening in San Antonio and will be having bypass surgery, Tuesday. We are still waiting on the surgeon to confirm the exact time. He was sent home this afternoon and will be returning  to NE Baptist early Tues  morning. He will be there about 5 days.
He had a stess test 2 wks. ago and the results showed some concerns. He was scheduled for the angiogram next week. but he started having chest pains Wed., so the Dr. tried the Nitro patches, which caused some serious concerns with blood pressure and heart rate. They moved the angiogram to yesterday and found a 90% blockage in an area that can't be treated any other way than the bypass.
My brother, Bill is scheduled for bypass surgery next Saturday and will be at the same hospital. Guess Joel is warming things up for him.
Thanks for the prayers!
He's bummed, but okay. Naturally, worried about "stuff".
I will keep everyone posted.
Thanks!
